Latin America storms impact ministryLatin America storms impact ministry

CHICAGO—Recent storms ripped through Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico, taking many lives and destroying thousands of homes. But Bible League personnel are ready to respond by providing Bibles to survivors through partner churches in areas of the disaster.

Haiti reported 48 dead and thousands left homeless. Deforested hillsides gave way to uncontrollable mudslides—destroying frail housing and burying unsuspecting people in the sludge and debris.

In the Dominican Republic, 79 died in the storms and 62,000 lost their homes. One Bible League church planter lost 21 family members. Pierre Philippe, Bible League’s director in the Dominican, reported offices in Jacmel and Cayes with knee-deep water. “But all the Bibles and study materials were saved because our staff carried them up to second floor spaces. Please pray for churches that suffered human and property loss.”

Arturo Robles, Bible League’s director in Mexico, reported, “Many have died, many are still not found, and 600,000 people are in emergency shelters. Pray especially for the children who are enduring this trauma.”

Bible League staff in each of these countries are anxious to minister to those who have suffered. “Many lost their personal Bibles in the flooding,” added Robles. “We want to get God’s Word back into their hands.”

In Villahermosa, Tabasco State, Mexico, two of our staff families took shelter in the Bible League office located on higher ground than their homes. “Many of our partner churches have lost Bibles and study materials,” said Rosilio Román, Bible League’s associate director of Latin America ministries. “We want to provide the churches with their Bible needs in this crisis as they minister to people who are struggling through the loss of loved ones and property. Pray with us for the thousands who are homeless after these horrific floods. Pray that people would see Jesus Christ as their only hope.”

Working alongside those bringing physical relief, Bible League-trained workers bring God’s hope and comfort to the disaster zone through His Word.
